• Walter Benjamin, The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction: "Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be. This unique existence of the work of art determined the history to which it was subject throughout the time of its existence. This includes the changes which it may have suffered in physical condition over the years as well as the various changes in its ownership. The traces of the first can be revealed only by chemical or physical analyses which it is impossible to perform on a reproduction; changes of ownership are subject to a tradition which must be traced from the situation of the original."

one assignment this semester included making a sonic portray the place(s) where we are locked down during the Covid19 pandemic. Since 1993 I am based in Den Haag in the Netherlands. Originally I came to study Sonology (= electronic music) and I'd make performances, music theater pieces and live radio shows (the wilmaphonestupidshow) on pirate radio Tonka, while at the time standing more or less right next to the transmitter. All of this is a very long time ago. The Corona lockdown has allowed me to be in Den Haag for a longer period of time than I've been able to in years. It's been a precious time of self-reflection that made me dig up stuff I made a long time ago. This particular piece is a new short edit of material I recorded 25 years ago in the analog studio at Sonology. It lies at the core of my work in Den Haag and it is a self portrait as much as a portrait of this place.
miniature 1 - church bells
1'03" - 1.2mb - 44,1khz

church bells ringing from 19:00-19:15 in The Hague on April 22, 2020. During the first few weeks of the Corona lockdown church bells were ringing every Wednesday evening for 15 minutes as a sign of hope and solidarity with healthcare workers. I didn't know about this when I happened to be at my studio and suddenly all these bells started ringing nearby. It was a beautiful evening, the sun was still up, and people were sitting and chatting on their balconies just across from my studio window. When I realized the that bells were not going to stop ringing any time soon I grabbed a recorder and set it up by the open window.

miniature 2 - Components
59" - 1.4mb - 44,1khz

"The insides of mechanical devices are filled with hard and elastic components. All these are imitations of human components, like bones, joints, muscles, skin, lungs, valves and teeth. They are of the correct weight, and their contours are supple and maneuverable. They are shiny; the light of the sun can reflect in them, as on the sharp edge of a shovel. But there is one exception: the wheel. All the human organs are fused with one another, even the eyeball, the tongue, etc. The wheel is the concept of pure movement around something else, independently of it."
Components is a paragraph from The Art of Reading Machines (1978) by Dick Raaymakers which was first published in English in "A Monograph" in 2008 (p.134); voice: anne wellmer, recorded and edited on the 1st of May 2020 at my studio in The Hague.

The imaginary is not formed in opposition to reality as its denial or compensation; it grows among signs, from song to song, in the interstice of repetitions and commentaries, it is born and takes shape in the interval between notes. (Adapted from Foucault)

Since the quarantine started, I have been working on music with my brother almost every day. This composition was made out of a sound recording of a normal session of us doing music, only that the sound material picked from the recording consists exclusively of the moments when we are not speaking or when no sound from the loudspeakers is produced.

Original text: “One must begin with error and transform it into truth. That is, one must uncover the source of the error, otherwise hearing the truth won’t help us. Overall subject of the course is experimental music, the act of listening and creative strategies of composers, performers and sound artists who continue to redefine what music is.

The pieces above are original works and sketches by the participants that can be listened to individually or freely mixed.
